What boxes do you see people more excited about? For example, the
quick grab and go's are popular along with ones that are in parks, or
preserves. But, I have some in areas that you have to hike to and they
get little or no action. I have one that goes to a very nice pond, and
the total amount of hiking is less than one I have in a park.
I am just curious. The geocache boxes I find on mountain tops have tons
of log entries. I know Letterboxing is not as popular, but there still
are a lot out there.
What have you placers seen regarding this.

We have found that letterboxing offers something for all types of
finders. We hide a few "grag and go" boxers, particularly for
travelers and folks who, for one reason or another, cannot or choose
not to search far and wide.
We enjoy hiking and getting close to nature. The boxes off the beaten
trail tend not to be visited as often. The feedback we receive from
the finders of those boxes usually reflect a higher degree of
satisfaction than the more accessible boxes. Different strokes for
different folks.

I agree, different boxes for different boxers and different
circumstances. For example, I like a good hike when I'm in a place
for a long enough time to allow for a good hike. But I also look
for quick finds when I'm driving between places.
For example, when driving 10+ hours to Ohio next month, I plan to
break up the trip by looking for some quick finds.
My two cents.

P.S.
I prefer Lbing to geocaching for the creativity and art.

The ones that people have to work at I really try to place them in
areas that are specail. Not just because its a mountain top. But a
mountain top with a breath taking view.
That is one of the biggest appeals to me about letterboxing. I have
been taken to some real jewels of locations, some close to where I
live and never heard of.

It's possible that Geocachers are in a younger average age than letterboxers and are more apt to go off trails for things just out of principal. I.E. one cache in Deer creek is located on an Island that requires wading across a stream, something letterboxers are not likely to do, although I would. I'm planning on hiding a box in my favorite cave in WVa this year even though I doubt very few will visit it.
By far I prefer boxes on trails to those that are located in busy places or parking lots, I absolutlely hate being observed. I've been bothered by police or patrolmen three times, an irate caretaker once and have had several run-ins with trail trolls. I waited for a mailman to get off his lunch break so I could get a box only to have someone decide that the location would be a good place to clean their car when I was trying to put it back.
My busiest box is a driveby tribute to WWI ace Eddie Rickenbacker while my least visited ones are on Sugarloaf mountain, one of the hills featured in Ohio's State seal.
However, I may not walk five miles for one box but I would if there more than one but that depends on where I am at the time.

we love the challenge of figuring out the clues
to us
geo-caching is just not the same
we have had GPS hand held and now in the car for 15 years
yes you get to great places
but you ALWAYS KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO GET THERE
with Letterboxing.....you might just ASSUME you understand a clue and
be way out of the ball park...did this on the COMB CITY QUEST last
weekend...and had an extra 40 minute stoll down the WRONG LANE!! haha
anyway
guess if i had any input on preferences
think that when you are going on a long hike (1 hour one way)
to find a box
we really like it when there is more than one LB on the trail

I'm with you, ogoshi63! It seems like now that the kids are grown and I have learned to loathe organized 'exercise' and need to find what I call 'incidental exercise' or 'exercise with a pleasureable purpose'. LBing fills that bill rather well. My LBing pal and I logged 12 hours yesterday! Wild goose chases galore, washed out trails, re-routed trails (alas clues not updated to match), mosquito attacks, ticks, obscure clues, and only 10 box finds, but to have first finds in three states - and all the views - WOW! So worth it!
The Capital District of NY State is so convenient a location for day trips to so may varied locations, it's a treasure in itself. Within a 3 hour drive I can be in the deep wilderness or Times Square or even in another country! Now that it is nearly Spring in the nearby Adirondacks, Green Mountains, White Mountains, and Catskills - we will be doing the longer hikes!
So, keep planting them Baker, we will eventually get there!

Shoot me an email when Prospect Mtn is in place. It would be worth the gas money at that point :) so we can do all three!
